Ahwaz Human Rights Organization welcomes the United States' inclusion of the leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the Ahwaz region, (province of Khuzestan), Hassan Shahwarpour, on its sanctions list for his involvement in human rights violations and the commission of the November 2019 massacre in Maashur (Mahshar)

Brian Hook, the US special representative for Iran, said at a press conference on Friday that Shahwarpour was put on a list of sanctions related to visas because he had "committed gross human rights violations against demonstrators."

He added that Shahwarpour supervised a massacre of 148 unarmed citizens in the Maashur area last November.

Iran had acknowledged the occurrence of the massacre of Maashur when the Special Security Forces and the Revolutionary Guards stormed the town of Al-Jarahi and other towns of Maashur, such as Koura and Khor Musa, and used tanks, machine guns and heavy weaponry to kill dozens of Arab citizens, including women and children.

Hook said that the US State Department based in its decision to impose sanctions on Shahwarpour on information obtained from Iranian civilian messages about the demonstrations, pointing to the fact that they received more than 88 thousand messages from social media from Iranian people about the suppression of demonstrations in Iran.

Ahwaz Human Rights Organization strongly condemns the mass killing that took place against the demonstrators in Maashur and stresses that the excessive violence committed against the Ahwazi demonstrators amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The organization calls on international human rights bodies to condemn these massacres and the need for the international community and the Human Rights Council to take steps towards sending a truth commission and bringing the perpetrators of these crimes to justice.

The authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran , through arbitrary arrests are attempting to exploit the armed attack on the parade of the armed forces in Ahwaz which took place on September 22 of this year and justify the suppression of Arab citizens in Iran . This widespread wave of arrests occurs despite the fact that ISIS claimed the responsibility for the attack.

By carrying systematic arrest and spreading intimidation among Arab society, Iranian security forces are attempting at distorting the truth about the growing dissatisfaction of the Arab people against the discriminatory politics of the central government.

Ahwaz Human Rights Organization (AHRO) condemns these arrests and calls for an immediate and unconditional release of detainees. Moreover, it warns against potential physical and mental torture to obtain compulsory confessions from detainees.

On 26 August the Iranian security forces attacked the residents of “Abolfazel” village in the suburbs of Ahwaz city.

On Wednesday, the residents resisted the confiscation of their agricultural land and homes which resulted in the arrest of dozen and the injury of several people.

The Ahwaz Human Rights Organisation received several videos showing wounded individuals, and tear gas being thrown on the villagers, following their complaints about the vandalisation of their home by the security forces.

“Mostazafan Foundation” which is affiliated with “Ali Khemenei”, the supreme leader of Islamic Republic of Iran is claiming the ownership of the village.

“Abolfazel” village is home to 300 families. The residents assert that they have the ownership documents of their lands and home and have been living in this area for more than four decades, “Mostazafan Foundation” on the other hand claims the full ownership of the village and prevents the provision of services and water for agricultural means.

According to the residents this is not the first time that they have faced such attacks. Since the Iraq- Iran war and in the year 1988 under the pretext of “war zone”, the authorities confiscated thousands of Hectares of land. And since the beginning of 1990’s the authorities yet again confiscated thousands of Hectares for national projects such as sugarcane production which led to the displacement of villagers .

The step of the “Mostazafin Foundation” comes in the context of seizing the lands of the villages adjacent to the Ahwazi cities after the recent increase in the prices of those lands.

A number of well-known Islamic Republic Mollahs stated a Fatwa (Islamic law) allowing organ donation of death sentenced Ahwazi Arab prisoners. They have also allowed trafficking of death sentenced prisoners. The Fatwa has been published in many Iranian websites. Senior clerics who issued the Fatwa are: Ayatollah Shabiri Zanjani, Seyed Saeed Hakim, Makarem Shirazi, Mousa Ardebili, Nouri Hamedani and Ayatollah Saneyi.

Iran's Revolutionary Court in Tehran, on Saturday, sentenced seven laborers and activists 110 years imprisonment and 74 lashes for organizing and covering protests and strikes by workers at the Haft Tapeh sugar cane company, north of city of Ahwaz.

The following are the names of the convicts and the details of the verdicts given by Judge Meqaisa, President of Section 4 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran:

  1. Ismael Bakhshi, laborer and trade unionist of the Sugar Cane Company, 14 years imprisonment
  2. Speida Golian, labor rights activist, 19 years and six months in prison
  3. Amir Hossein Mohammadi Fard, editor-in-chief of "Gam" magazine and labor rights defender, 18 years in prison
  4. Asal Mohammadi, member of the editorial board of the magazine "Gam" and an advocate for the rights of workers, 18 years imprisonment
  5. Sanaz Al-Hayari, editorial board member of the magazine "Gam " and an advocate for workers' rights, 18 years imprisonment
  6. Amir Amergoli, member of the editorial board of the magazine "Gam" and a defender of workers' rights, 18 years imprisonment
  7. Mohammed Khneifer, worker and trade union activist at Sugar Cane Company, 6 years imprisonment

The verdicts were given based on vague and flimsy charges such as “assembly and collusion with the intention of acting against national security,” “insulting the Supreme Leader,” “spreading lies,” “propaganda against the regime” and "disturbing public order.” Workers have been going on strikes and peaceful protests over the past year for not receiving their salaries for several months, poor working conditions, dismissal of workers and other trade union demands.

Ahwaz Human Rights Organisation (AHRO) strongly condemns these repressive provisions and calls for the abolition of these sham trials and the immediate and unconditional release of all detained workers and activists.
